The Mid Week League starts in May. It consists of a series of 10k road races held in the week at 7.45pm.  Each race is open to all Royston Runners for FREE, all you need is to wear a Royston Runners t shirt/vest. There is also a buffet at the end of each race.

These races are open to all runners of all abilities. They are a great opportunity to improve your fitness and meet other members of the club with whom you do not normally run, as well competing for your running club.

SUMMARY OF THIS YEAR’S MIDWEEK LEAGUE

It was good to see new faces at the races this year along with the regular ones. Overall it proves we are good enough to compete in the 1st Division with the runners we have. Only the Epping race on Wednesday the 18th July let us slip because of the small turn out compared to the other 3 races. So with more commitment we should bounce back up to the first division next year.

Now as a team we came 5th in the Division with quite a few people running P.B’s but we did get 3 awards in individual categories which were: Nicky Tyrrell 3rd Vet 35 Woman: Paul Green 3rd Vet 50 Male; and the ever youthful Dave Evans 1st Vet 70 Male. So well done to them and well done to everyone who ran because it takes everybody to make a team. Thank you for supporting the Club, now you can enjoy your summer holidays knowing cross-country season is not that far away.

Home Race Report Tuesday 3rd June - Paul Haynes

In conditions that could only be described as awful, the Royston Runners hosted the second race in the Mid-Week Leagues. The non-stop rain caused logisticalnightmares, including a last minute change to cars parking in a farmyard, as thecricket field was flooded! More grey hairs for Maurice!

So with the rain falling the runners set off. After running through many flooded areas first home for Royston was Ian Murray, who had told me before the race that he was just going to ‘jog’ round! Let’s hope his fitness improves!!! Second home was Richard Lowden and third Toby Staines with a Personal Best Time. This was a great effort considering the atrocious conditions. For the ladies we had Nicky Tyrell first home, followed by Wendy Jones and third, Sian Webster. We had 60 Royston Runners turn out overall. A great effort.

The runners are now fourth in the league and we are looking to improve that position at Orion Harriers!

I would also like to thank everyone else who helped make the race happen. Thanks to those who contributed to the buffet……especially the people who brought the ‘wagon wheels’!

Standing giving out place tickets at the end of the race with Maureen Miller, we were impressed with the good humour and tolerance while we tried to hand out tickets and keep them dry at the same time! Our thanks to everyone.

ORION HARRIERS MWL

Royston Runners struggled at Orion Harriers. We did not have a full strength Ladies Team, but the Ladies that did run ran a sterling race. Nicki Tyrell was home first, with Flick Shaw second and Nina Reid third. Katherine Pearson as ever ran her hardest, and it showed at the finish line! For the Men’s Team, Karl Cable was first, followed by Toby Staines and Richard Lowden.

Richard Lowden had an eventful race as he missed the start! He ran straight from the car park, throwing his car keys to me as I pointed him in the direction of the start line. I believe hethen took a wrong turn in the woods before finding the right way!!!

ST ALBANS MWL

After the Orion Harriers leg, we had found ourselves in the relegation zone! We were in the battle with Orion Harriers!

With the bit between our teeth, both the Men and Ladies team ran their hardest! First home for the Men was Karl Cable, second was Richard Lowden (who made the start this time!) and Toby Staines third. For the Ladies, Nicki Tyrell was first home, second was Libby Watson and third Kate Nankivell.

With the race run, all we could do was wait for the results to come through with the final standings!

Unfortunately, we did not manage to stay up and have been relegated to division two for next year! Orion Harriers pulled out the stops at St Albans (and a few cheeky ringers) and beat us in the battle!

But I believe we have got ‘bouncebackability’! We have got bag loads of potential for

next years campaign to get back to division 1.

Congratulation goes to Nicki Tyrell who came 3rd in the V35

Paul Green who came 3rd in the V50

AND Dave Evans who came 1st in the V70.
